TWO-STEP PROCESS

CapDI is a simple two-step process wherein water flows between electrodes, where the electrode surfaces are separated from the water by ion-selective membranes that allow positive or negative ions to pass.

PURIFICATION

REGENERATION

Feed water passes between oppositely charged electrodes which electrostatically remove dissolved ions, leaving pure water flowing out of the cell.
Feed water flushes through the cell at a lower flow rate, while electrode polarity is reversed. Ions are rejected from the electrode surface, concentrated in the flow channel and flushed from the cell before the cycle is repeated.

How to get started

Here’s an overview of how to progress from tier to tier.

Test the Technology

Begin with a plug-and-play modular unit that makes it easy to validate Voltea Technology's performance in real conditions. The compact design is representative of larger industrial applications, using the same core technology as our standard modules, so the results you see at pilot scale are the same you can expect at full scale — real testing, real results.

Join Certified Partner Program (CPP) - License & Performance Deliverables

Join the Certified Partner Program (CPP) to move from testing to full-scale manufacturing with Voltea Technology Inside your machines. A comprehensive license — with fees credited toward future hardware — provides access to Voltea modules, proprietary know-how, and partner references. Alongside this, clear performance guidelines on warranties, guarantees, and feedwater parameters ensure every system you build delivers with reliability and confidence.

Voltea Certified Partner Case Study: Hybrid Voltea & RO System for Brine Water in Tanzania

At Voltea, your business and water needs inspire us. By uniquely integrating electro-membranes and pressure-membranes into a single advanced system, we maximize the benefits of both technologies. This synergy not only boosts economic efficiency but also overcomes the technical limitations that might arise if each system were used independently.

The Challenge

Water treatment projects in regions such as Tanzania face significant hurdles, including high infrastructure costs (CAPEX) from traditional pressure-driven systems, energy-intensive operations (OPEX) that drive up long-term expenses, fluctuating water quality demands requiring flexible real-time adjustment, and harsh operating conditions with variable feedwater quality and wide temperature ranges. These challenges demand a solution that delivers sustainable water treatment while remaining cost-effective and adaptable.

The Solution: Hybrid Membrane System

Voltea deployed a hybrid membrane system that combined the strengths of pressure-membrane technology with our proprietary CapDI (Capacitive Deionization) electro-membrane technology. Designed for low-pressure operation, the system significantly reduced capital costs while offering tunability to adjust water quality in real time and delivering high energy efficiency to minimize both operating expenses and environmental footprint.

Voltea’s CapDI Technology

At the heart of the hybrid system is CapDI, a tunable and scalable deionization technology that removes dissolved salts from a wide range of water sources including tap water, brackish groundwater, and industrial process water. CapDI operates effectively across temperatures from 5–60°C (40–140°F), manages challenging feedwaters with higher turbidity, and requires little to no chemical use—ensuring both sustainable performance and minimal environmental impact.

The Results

The Tanzanian project demonstrated how hybrid membrane systems can unlock new opportunities in water treatment by reducing CAPEX through low-pressure design, optimizing OPEX with energy efficiency and minimal chemical consumption, and providing operational flexibility with tunable water quality that adapts to real-time demand—all while lowering environmental impact compared to conventional systems.
