Voltea’s Capacitive Deionization (CapDI) is emerging as a key technology for industries focused on water sustainability. PepsiCo, aiming for net water positivity by 2030, has partnered with Voltea to implement CapDI technology at its Oakland, CA bottling facility. This innovative system is designed to treat and recycle reverse osmosis (RO) reject water, reducing the need for freshwater in cooling tower operations.
The Voltea system achieved over 96% water recovery, a significant last-mile achievement towards the realization of PepsiCo’s ambitious water reduction target. By treating difficult RO wastewater with varying conductivity levels, the Voltea CapDI system converts it into water suitable for reuse. This reduces strain on freshwater resources, saves money, and reduces chemical consumption, all in support of PepsiCo’s industrial sustainability goals.
In August 2024, PepsiCo presented these results at the IWA World Water Congress in Toronto, showcasing how Voltea’s CapDI technology is contributing to their water conservation targets. The presentation emphasized CapDI’s role in improving water recovery rates and offering a sustainable solution for industrial water reuse.
Conclusion: Voltea’s CapDI system is helping PepsiCo achieve its sustainability goals while setting a new industry standard for water reuse. With over 96% recovery, the technology offers a powerful solution for reducing environmental impact and maximizing water resources in industrial processes.

In response to worsening drought conditions and the impacts of climate change, California has enacted permanent water restrictions for its residents. These new measures, aimed at promoting long-term water conservation and sustainability practices, include:
⦁ Outdoor Watering Limitations: Restrictions on the amount and timing of outdoor watering.
⦁ Water-Efficient Appliances: Mandatory use of water-efficient appliances in homes and businesses.
⦁ Car Washing and Lawn Irrigation: Tightened car washing and lawn irrigation regulations to reduce water waste.
These efforts reflect California’s commitment to managing its scarce water resources more effectively in the face of climate change.
Challenges Faced by Organizations
California Agricultural and Business organizations are currently facing unprecedented challenges: antiquated water treatment systems that wastewater, increasing regulations, corporate mandates for water reduction, rising costs for water consumption and disposal, seasonal variability in water quality, and increasing water scarcity, among others.
Voltea’s CapDI Technology: A Modern Solution
Voltea’s Capacitive Deionization (CapDI) technology addresses these issues by using small amounts of electricity to purify water. CapDI technology offers several advantages:
⦁ Water Efficiency: This technology often saves twice as much water as traditional methods.
⦁ Durability and Low Maintenance: CapDI systems tolerate variances in water chemistries and produce tailored water, requiring less maintenance.
⦁ Remote Operability and IoT Readiness: The systems are remotely operable and ready for IoT integration, enhancing ease of management.
⦁ Chemical-Free Operation: CapDI does not use added chemicals or salts, making it an environmentally friendly option.
Bottom Line: Voltea’s CapDI technology not only increases profits and reduces risk for organizations but also supports environmental sustainability by conserving water and reducing chemical use.
