Pumps and Systems Magazine Features Voltea CapDI Steel Mill Case Study
Voltea, the global leader in membrane-capacitive deionization (CapDI©) electro-desalination technology, has been featured in this month’s Pumps and Systems Magazine!
The feature includes a CapDI case study on the Republic Steel installation site in Lorain, OH.
High-quality water is vital for many industry applications, from cooling towers at a manufacturing plant to irrigation systems at a large agricultural operation.
Most commercial businesses and industrial plants pull water from the local municipality to power their appliances and equipment, feed their lawns and provide drinking water on-site. However, the municipal water source is not always the most feasible or easily accessible option, forcing business owners and consultants to look for other ways to get the water they need.
A steel mill located in Lorain, Ohio had recently installed a new gasification system on-site at its 600-acre facility along the Black River, which required the use of a cooling tower for operation. This cooling tower, however, was far away from the main water line and the cost to connect the two was quoted at $1.2M USD. Due to the excessively high cost, the mill needed to consider other options.
Given the location of the steel mill, the nearby Black River became the only feasible water source for the cooling needs of this new gasification system. However, the Black River presented new problems. Raw river water would require significant treatment before it could be suitable as a feed water source to the cooling tower.

NSF designation confirms DiEntry System is approved for consumer-related use
Voltea, the global leader in membrane-capacitive deionization (CapDI©) electro-desalination technology, announced today it has received the world’s leading water certification and listing for its DiEntry© water treatment system – NSF/ANSI 42 approval from National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) International.
Businesses and consumers should take note that this confirmation from the leading independent public health and safety organization makes it possible for Voltea to sell its DiEntry Systems for potable drinking water purification in residences, restaurants, hotels, cafes and all drinking water applications.
“Earning NSF certification and listing for DiEntry is a huge achievement representing enormous value creation for Voltea’s customers and share-owners,” said Voltea CEO Bryan Brister. “NSF is extremely thorough – this certification is similar to a new drug receiving FDA clearance and gives business owners and homeowners peace of mind that these systems meet the most stringent health regulations for any drinking water application anywhere in the world.”
DiEntry went through hundreds of thousands of cycles of operation to ensure the mechanical integrity of the system under hydraulic pressure and was subjected to exhaustive leach testing ensuring all wetted surfaces were appropriate for drinking water applications. This rigorous procedure determines that products are safe for use and that they deliver the gold standard according to NSF/ANSI 42 Listing.
This significant milestone makes Voltea the first and only manufacturer worldwide to have an NSF-certified and listed product with patented CapDI technology. The certification also paves the way for Voltea’s technology to be used in consumer products such as dishwashers and washing machines.
Voltea’s point-of-entry system, DiEntry, is the next generation residential water treatment system that uses Voltea’s tunable, high recovery, energy-saving CapDI technology to provide complete control over the quality and taste of a home’s water while reducing environmental impact. The system uses no salt or chemicals, wastes less water than other traditional purification technologies, and can be perfectly tuned to provide on-demand purified water.
Founded in 1944, NSF conducts extensive product testing for not only drinking water applications but food equipment, building materials, appliances and home products, automotive parts and more. This sought-after certification involves an exhaustive, time-intensive testing process that is extremely thorough, evaluating every aspect of a product, which is part of what makes the achievement of certification so monumental.
“The NSF/ANSI 42 certification and listing for our DiEntry product is something we are proud of achieving,” Brister said. “This shows that CapDI allows superior water treatment that meets the absolute highest quality and safety standard for drinking water applications. Our customers are worth it.”

Next generation product is environmentally friendly option for builders, homeowners
Voltea, the global leader in membrane-capacitive deionization (CapDI©) electro-desalination technology, is showcasing its first residential-focused water purification unit, DiEntry, at the International Builders Show/Kitchen and Bath Industry Show on Feb. 19-21, 2019.
Voltea will be giving away one of its innovative DiEntry units to one lucky show attendee who will be able to experience first-hand the benefits the technology provides.
DiEntry addresses the most pressing water issues in the market – quality, taste and waste – by using Voltea’s energy-saving CapDI technology to “tune” water to meet the needs of the homeowner and community. This technology has disrupted an industry that relies on chemical additives or so-called “soft” salt to treat water.
Because of its patented technology and growing customer base across multiple industries, Voltea was recognized as the Breakthrough Water Technology Company of the Year at the 2018 Global Water Summit in Paris.
“We have seen a tremendously positive response to DiEntry by builders, resellers and homeowners around the world who are interested in our industry-leading CapDI technology,” said Voltea CEO Bryan Brister.

ROI Payback: $37,000 saved annually in replacement parts
Kalida Manufacturing, a supplier for a major North American auto manufacturer, was experiencing the high electrical conductivity (EC) that’s common in many process water applications, causing significant damage to equipment and increasing annual costs.
The damaged components weren’t the only problem. The company also dealt with significant downtime and increased maintenance. Kalida needed to find a water filtration solution to address these issues.
Voltea’s revolutionary water treatment technology, CapDI, allowed Kalida to regain control of conductivity levels in the equipment and ensure a consistent quality output. This reduced the need for significant maintenance, thus reducing downtime and overall damage to components.

Global water desalination technology manufacturer showcasing water purification systems at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show Jan 8 – 11, 2019 in Las Vegas!
Voltea, the global leader in Membrane Capacitive Deionization (CapDI©) water purification technology, has been selected as the residential water treatment solution for Green Builder Media’s The Align Project – a groundbreaking, sustainable home that features only the top forward-thinking products and technologies.
The demonstration home will be featured at two of the biggest technology- and building-focused trade shows in the country: the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), organized by the Consumer Technology Association, and the National Association of Home Builders International Builders’ Show (IBS).
When show attendees at CES (January 8-11, 2019, Las Vegas) and IBS (February 19-21, 2019, Las Vegas) visit The Align Project home, they will see Voltea’s revolutionary water purification technology, including:
• DiEntry®, a new residential point-of-entry system designed for households of three or more
• DiUse®, a point-of-use system popular with restaurants and coffee shops and also for smaller dwellings that delivers consistent, precise water quality with improved taste
Both systems can seamlessly integrate into any smart home to deliver high-quality water with a low environmental impact. At CES and IBS, Voltea will serve CapDI-treated water side-by-side with Las Vegas city water to demonstrate the exceptional difference in quality. The Align Project, created by Green Builder Media and prefab home builder Kasita, is a one-year demonstration project designed to help people understand how we can align our lifestyles with our values and environmental realities, showcasing only the most innovative, cutting-edge smart home products and technologies that prioritize sustainability.
Voltea’s environmentally responsible water treatment solutions were a natural fit for the project, as they allow for tunable water purification at a lower economic cost and a lower environmental impact than traditional desalination technologies. The systems operate with patented CapDI technology – a salt-free, chemical-free, two-step process wherein water flows between electrodes which remove oppositely charged salts and water hardness.
“Sustainability has always been a top priority for us, which is why we provide a water treatment solution that is remarkably different from any other technology on the market – a solution that delivers high-quality water without putting a strain on our environment,” said Voltea CEO Bryan Brister. “The Align Project is all about disrupting the status-quo, and that’s exactly what our technology is doing. Partnering with Green Builder Media on this project was a no brainer.”
